Suggest Treatment For Shingles, abdominal Pain And Constipation

My husband has been diagnosed twice for shingles in the last 48 hours.., but he doesn t really have a rash, none of the prescribed medications are working and he has a moderate to severe abdominal pain.... He also has been constipated since Saturday, they prescribed Magnesium citrate for that and as soon as he took it, he started vomiting.... Is it possible it would be his gal bladder or his intestine?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history related to your husband having pain in abdomen, constipation, vomiting after taking Magnesium Citrate, diagnosed a Shingles but no painkillers helped.
Diagnosis of Shingles before appearance of typical rash may take 5 days to and the pain may not respond to classical pain medicines.
Needs antiviral and strong painkillers for pain of nerve origin.
The history and distribution is classical, the pain is superficial and in the skin and not in the abdomen.
Hence I would advise you the following:
Consult your Doctor again or consult a General Surgeon for proper clinical evaluation, examination and go for investigations like Ultrasonography of abdomen.
CT scan if required.
Tests of blood, urine and stool.
Since there is vomiting after the laxative, it may be better to change over to another stool softener or laxative.
All this lead to a proper diagnosis and also see for appendicitis, colitis,
and so on.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
