Suggest Treatment For Short Term Memory Loss In An Elderly Person

My father experienced an episode of short term memory loss yesterday. He asked about a box on the counter, I told him what it was then he turned away and within seconds asked again. This occurred nearly 4 times. In the same time frame, he could not remember putting groceries away or eating a yogurt. The entire moment of memory loss lasted about 10-20 minutes then seemed to pass. Later when we discussed it, he had no recollection of the conversation or the memory loss. In order to convince him that he ate a yogurt, we found the empty container in the trash to show him. He will be 68 and this is the first time something like this has happened.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

If this recurs, he should be assessed. Recurrence may indicate early dementia or may be due to a mini stroke

A CT scan brain and blood tests to check for other causes of change in cognition would be necessary
This would include ruling out infection, electrolyte disorders , anemia

I hope this helps
