Alendronate sodium is used to increase bone mass in patients with
osteoporosis. Its common side effects are
abdominal pain, dyspepsia, diarrhoea, constipation, oesophagitis, erosions, ulceration, peptic ulceration,
osteonecrosis of the jaw, bone/joint/muscle pain,
hypocalcaemia, and nausea.
This is the best medicine for treatment of osteoporosis. If you stop it, your bones become further weak and your bones might fracture. Other medicines are available such as denosumab but it has more side effects. Calcium is also used but it is not as effective as alendronate.
