My daughter is almost 7 yrs old. Nov 25 started snoring and sleep apnea. Sleep test says obstructive and central apnea...tonsils are 3 of 4 and adenoids 40% blocking. Saw pedi neurologist and they are doing MRI and sending to opthalomoligist to check if too much spinal fluid in brain...Should I be panicing?
Thank you for your question on HCM! I understand your concern.
I agree with your doctors on the examinations performed. Usually in children the main cause of sleep apnea is an obstruction of the upper airways. In this case surgery with removal of the tonsils or adenoids would help.
An increased intracranial pressure, can also cause central sleep apnea. The important thing is to exclude severe causes of central sleep apnea. A brain MRI would also be helpful, for this purpose.
Regarding the treatment there are different types of devices ( besides the above mentioned surgery option), like Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), which can help her with a normal life.
Hope to have been helpful!
