Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I've developed a crippling social anxiety disorder and cannot find a doctor who can prescribe me with anything effective. I've had success with amphetamines (personal experimentation) and had all socially anxious symptoms disappear. My doctor does not agree with prescribing amphetamines for my social anxiety, even though I know they help. I'm so down right now that I have already made the decision I'll get them on my own. My question is, if I take them at a low dose, will I develop tolerance?
You have social anxiety disorder and are self medicating yourself with amphetamines. Amphetamines can increase wakefulness, alertness, concentration, motivation but they are not approved drugs for social anxiety disorder. These drugs can falsely improve symptoms of social anxiety but they are liable to produce dependence and have high abuse potential. So as per my opinion you should not take these drugs. You will develop tolerance in some time.
Most psychiatrists prescribed medicines like propranolol, low dose benzodiazepines for treatment of social anxiety disorder. These medicines help to improve the symptoms of anxiety. SSRIs are needed for sever anxiety. Consult a psychiatrist for prescription.
Apart from that start exercising daily and practice yoga. This will help to improve the symptoms.
Thanks, hope this helps you
