Suggest Treatment For Sore Throat And Persistent Weight Loss

My husband is 45 years old, he is an alcoholic, drinking at least 20 beers per day and a smoker of 2 packs per day, he is losing weight and now complains of a sore throat for 3-4 weeks, he states it feels tight and swollen. I am concerned it may be serious, he is scared to go see a doctor. I think he needs to be seen, I am guessing I am correct?
