Hello,

Your symptoms may be because of conditions like viral cold, upper respiratory tract infection by bacteria, acute laryngo-tracheo-bronchitis, or viral pharyngitis. The treatment must include fever if present, tab. Acetaminophen is to be taken every 6th hour, antibiotic like Amoxicillin and clavulanate for 5 days. Nasal decongestants like Oxymetazoline spray can be used.

If there is allergic component involved, tab. Benadryl or tab. Cetirizine would help. Drinking warm water will soothe cough. Steam inhalation is advised once daily. Warm and salt water gargles advised to help sooth the irritation. Nasal stuffiness can be combated with tab. Sinarest which is a combination of paracetamol, phenephrine and chlorpheniramine maleate. Taken twice daily for 3 days.

Cough if productive, mucolytics can be used like Mucinex (guaifenesin) Available as a tablet and syrup. Mucolyte (bromhexine). If your infection doesn't come down even after 5 days, you need to consult a physician for physical examination and appropriate treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
