Suggest Treatment For Sore Throat, Runny Nose, Headaches And Cough

I have a cold, I think. Sore throat, runny nose, headaches, coughing, sneezing.... All that is bad enough, but I am generating a LOT of spit/phlegm, most of it clear, but some has been yellowish, and there have been occasional semi solid blobs with flecks or streaks of reddish brown. And it triggers a gag and vomit reflex. What is wrong with me and is there something I can do while I am waiting for my doctor to return my call?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that you are suffering from severe upper respiratory tract infection, also known as Common Cold or Influenza or flu and the symptoms of sore throat, nasal congestion, cough and runny nose are all due to it..
As it is a viral infection it will not resolve with antibiotics as the antibiotics acts against bacteria and not viruses..
The infection will however resolve once the virus will complete its cycle in human body..
red brown mucous is due to blood mixed mucous that occurs due to bleeding from inflamed sinus linings and nasal mucosa due to infection..
As of now you can start with supportive treatment to relieve the symptoms like:
1. Gargle with a warm saline solution that is by mixing 1 teaspoon salt in a glass of water and warm it to make a luke warm solution..
2. Take a combination of decongestant like Phenylephrine, mucolytic like Ambroxol and anti allergic levocetrizine and another combination of Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen..
3. Do steam inhalations..
4. Avoid spicy and chilled foods..
5. Sip on warm water throughout the day..
6.Take cough expectorant containing Gueinfenesin and cough suppressant containing Xylometazoline..

Hopefully the symptoms will resolve within a week and if it worsen consult a General Physician and get evaluated..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
