Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have an extremely sore throat. I can see white spots on the back of my throat and have swollen glands with no fever. I had a strep test down which was negative. However, I have no cold symptoms and this is day 4 of the sore throat. It is very painful to swallow and I am taking over the max dose of advil along with throat lozenges and throat spray. Could it be possible I have strep without it showing up?
Sore throat is the condition involving the pain or scratchy throat. The common cause for sore throat is viral infection. Other than viral infection, bacterial infection also cause sore throat. Streptoccal infection is the common bacterial infection causing sore throat. Other causes are GERD, allergies, dry air, etc. Viral infection usually lasts for four to five days. Until that, sore throat can be treated with analgesics and lozenge. Salt water gargling with warm water soothe the throat.
Antibiotics are advised for bacterial etiology. It is advised to take complete course of antibiotics for complete recovery from the illness. If the cause for sore throat is other than infections, the management depends on the cause for concern such correcting the acid reflux in case of Gastroesophageal reflux disease, improving the room conditions, preventing exposure to allergens, etc.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
