Suggest Treatment For Sprained And Swollen Ankles

Hello, I sprained my ankle pretty bad this afternoon. Slipped on a dog bone.. It was swollen pretty bad but has decreased in size. Still in a lot of pain and been taking pain killers. I work a 9 hour shift tomorrow. I work for Walgreens and I m suppose to be on the register my whole shift. I m worried that standing on it all day will make it worse. Should I call off and go see my family doctor?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and welcome to HCM.
Thank you for posting your question here.
I would defenitely recommend you to take a duty leave tomorrow and see your doctor. As you said it may be a sprain but we will also need to rule out any fractures. So an xray of the affected part is necessary and should be treated accordingly. For the time being immobilise your ankle with bandages and try not to bear much weight on the affected limb.Apply cold packs as this will resuce the swelling and pain.Applying topical analgesics like diclofenac gel will also help along with oral pain killers.
I hope i have helped.
Thank you.
