Suggest Treatment For Staph Infection

I had a staph infection on the front of my calf a few years ago.(bottom of shower curtain scraping under nail then scratched my leg). I recently cut my 5th and 4th toe almost halfway off and receive stitches at the emergency room. Does staph lay dormant in the body or once I got rid of the infection of staff did it go away?
