Suggest Treatment For Stomach Cramps After Taking Mestinon For Myasthenia Gravis
Hi - I m a 63 year old female who has recently been diagnosed with myasthenia gravis. I have been prescribed Mestinon and am having real issues with the drug.I get severe stomach cramps that make me sicker than the disease. My neurologist s office has suggested taking immodium but it doesn t help and makes me constipated which causes more cramping. The cramping starts 4-5 days after I take the drug on a daily basis 3 X daily. I stop because it s so uncomfortable and then start again because the symptoms come back. Is there any solution or should I wait for my Feb. 4th appt. with my neurologist?
Madam, Welcome to HCM! I really appreciate your concern for stomach cramps while taking Mestinon. Mestinon is used to improve muscle strength in patients with myasthenia gravis. It works by preventing the breakdown of a certain natural substance (acetylcholine) in your body. Acetylcholine is needed for normal muscle function. In my opinion the muscle cramps in your case appear to be due to high dose of mestinon so you are advised to take buscopan tablets till you see your neurologist. He might adjust the dose of mestinon or decrease its dosage frequency. Buscopan tablets will relieve you from cramps.
