Hi there,
Thanks for your query in HCM. I am Dr.Aliem, and I am pleased to answer your query.
Such a long query. But I understand the extent to which this has made you worry about yourself.
Acute onset of
diarrhea, as in your case (5 days duration) is usually of infectious cause. Source of infection is usually unhygienic food or water. Nitric oxide boosters can cause diarrhea, but this is rare and usually occurs on initiation of its intake. Here are my suggestions for you:
1. Take plenty of water/Tender coconut.
2. Get Oral Rehydration Salts Sachet (One litre pack) from your nearby pharmacy. Mix it with one litre of clean drinking water and drink it @ 200 ml for every bowel movement.
3. Consult your physician at the earliest. You may need to undergo some tests, including motion test for ova/cysts. If your
dehydration is severe, you may need admission in hospital and i.v fluids. You'll become fine with a course of antibiotics/ some antidiarrheals and probiotics. It may take 24-48 hours for your diarrhea to get arrested, but do complete the course of antibiotics, as suggested by your physician.
4. It's a good job that you have withheld nitric oxide boosters. You can resume them later on.
5. If your diarrhea persists despite a course of drugs or if it recurs frequently, you may need additional tests to find out the cause.
6. Take only bland diet with plenty of fluids until this episode is over.
7. Always avoid taking foods that are improperly handled/stored or undercooked.
8. Preparation H is effective for pain associated with haemorrhoids. Your
anal pain is associated with diarrhea. It goes off when diarrhea stops. But if it comforts you, there is no harm in using it.
This problem is something that needs urgent treatment, because rapid loss of water and electrolytes through diarrheic stools can have deleterious consequences.
But once treated, most probably this will not have any complication or sequelae.
Hope this helps. Feel free to post further queries if any. If you have no further queries, do give your feedback.
Take care.
Dr.Aliem MD.,
