Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Suggest Treatment For Stopped Growth And Blindness In A Child After Radiation Therapy
Helo, my 3 year olf daughter was diagnosed with aggressive non-germinoma Yolk-sac brain tumour at a late stage in the supracellar area. she had surgery then chemo and was growing normally. It was only after the radiation (only to tumour bed) that she stopped growing. I do not what to do? doctors have not given us any growth hormones. She also is aking cortisol hormone as the gland responsible for it does not seem to be working properly, we have been trying to lower the dose but were not able to stop it. Ps: she lost sight in both eyes since tumour was pressing on optic nerves. Can you advise us please?
And I am really sorry that your child has got germinoma in the brain. Post-radiation or due to a tumour itself, there may be pituitary hormone deficiency (hypopituitarism).
It seems your child has adrenal hormone insufficiency, which is a life-threatening condition and needs to be treated.
I would like to check other hormone levels such as Growth hormone, TSH, FSH, LH levels.
If Growth Hormone (GH) levels are low, I would suggest you consult pediatric endocrinologists and consider starting it.
Height may improve with GH therapy. For vision loss due to complete nerve damage, there is nothing much to offer.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
