Suggest Treatment For Superficial Phlebitis

My 99 year old mother was hospitalized for a few days and was diagnosed with arrhythmia, atrial fib which resolved with IV treatment with amiodarone. She was sent home today but had complained about pain, swelling, and redness in her wrist after she had diagnostic work-ups to rule out pulmonary embolism, heart blocks, etc. The affected left forearm, the dorsal aspect, is now very red and swollen. Her right arm was used for the venipuncture, not the left, but she remembers that a clamp was placed on her left wrist during one of the scans that were performed. She wonders why they did not do anything while hospitalized after she told them this left forearm was in a lot of pain and was turning red and inflamed. It this is a superficial phlebitis, what is the treatment?. She will be visited by a home health nurse tomorrow morning. She is now taking Elequis and oral amiodarone, along with her other meds for CHF, hypertension, and CAD. She has never smoked and had her first NSTEMI at age 94 so she has been very healthy. She has two stents but no cardiovascular bypass surgeries, no PAD, and blood pressure is well controlled as well as her cholesterol levels which have never been high.

Welcome to healthcaremagic.com. I am sorry about your trouble. Please note that the treatment for superficial phlebitis is a warm compress, and ibuprofen. Now if she has a contraindication for taking NSAID's then this should not be prescribed. It seems that she doesn't have Kidney disease/and or prior gastrointestinal bleeding. The pain will take a while to subside and I know this pain is very concerning, stay the course and it shall resolve. I hope this helps. Thank you and good luck.
