Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My sister sometimes has difficulty swallowing. When this happens food or water comes back to mouth. She gets better after waiting for some time. Is there a treatment for this. Long time back about 20 years back or so she had this problem when doctors said that her food pipe is narrow at the end. Then they tried treatment and the symptoms did not occur for several years. Now these symptoms are back. Any advice?
I understand difficulty swallowing can be frightening some times. Common causes of this can be problems related to structure and functioning of your food pipe, neurological disorders and even some psychological disorders.
Based on what the doctors said to you, your sister might be having a condition called Achalasia:
- where the end of the food pipe becomes narrow Its better to meet a gastroenterologist and get some special tests like - Endoscopy and manometry.
If you want further advice or help from me, please answer the following questions:
1) Dose she have difficulty swallowing with liquids or solids or with both?
2) Is she losing weight ? How is her appetite?
3) Is she depressed or does she have any psychological issues ?
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Samuel
