Suggest Treatment For Swelling And Bruise On Ankle And Foot
Good morning. I was playing softball a month back and took a line drive off of my ankle. It bruised down the ankle and foot and swelled significantly. After two weeks my wife sent me to emerg to confirm there was no break. x-rays showed no break. It s a month later and the swelling is still moderate and the there is purple bruising that lingers. There are white dots all over it as well. At emerg they suggested the bruising may take another 2 weeks to subside. What is somewhat more of a concern is the ongoing swelling and the purple/red bruising just above my left inside ankle bone. Should I be concerned?
Since the X-Ray doesn't show any signs of fracture but the ankle is still swollen, inflamed & purple in color, there is ligament/tendon injury, ankle sprain or strain.
Purple coloration is due to blood clots beneath the skin. You can apply locally ointment Thrombophob to help reduce the clots.
Take NSAIDS (Combiflam) to reduce pain. Do not walk or do heavy work, stay at rest. Use of ice, a compression bandage or will help to reduce the swelling.
Keep your affected foot raised on a stool while sitting & on a pillow while on the bed.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
