Suggest Treatment For Swelling And Pain In The Leg

I am having an episode of gout, first in two years. No medicine available tonight. Anything I can do to relieve pain tonight and ease swelling before calling my doctor first thing in the morning? I have taken colchicine in past and allopurinal , do not have any available right now.

Hello,

I am sorry to hear about your pain. I will try my best to help you in this regard. There are several measures that can provide you some relief.

1. Try applying ice packs for 20 to 30 minutes over the painful joint.
2. Rest -- don't actively move the affected joint
3. Drink a lot of water
4. There are some over-the-counter medications available to treat this pain. First among them is NSAID class of drugs (for example Ibuprofen)

But be sure to visit your doctor at the earliest, as in addition to treating the present crises, he will also give you advise on what steps you should take to prevent further attacks.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bright Jebaraj S
