Hello,
The following are few causes of pain and swelling at the wrist joint:
1) Rheumatoid arthritis
2) Gouty arthritis
3) Osteoarthritis
4) Reactive arthritis
5) Injury to the wrist
6) Ganglion cyst
7) Any tumor of wrist
8) Tendonitis
9) Carpal tunnel syndrome
10) Psoriatic arthritis
11) Infection of wrist joint.
You need to undergo the following tests:
1) Complete blood counts
2) Serum RA factor
3) X-ray wrist joint
Treatment depends on the cause. My suggestions are as follows:
1) Pain relieving medications like NSAIDs like tab.
Ibuprofen or tab. Naproxen to be taken twice daily for 14 days.
2) To prevent gastric irritation, tab. Pantop to be taken once daily before food.
3) If you have bleeding tendencies, kidney failure or
heart failure, avoid NSAIDs and use opioids like
Oxycodone,
Hydrocodone or Tramadol.
4) After the swelling gets reduced, you need to go for
physical therapy to strengthen the wrist muscles and reduce the pain.
If your pain doesn't subside in 1 week, you need to consult a competent orthopedic doctor for further evaluation.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
