Suggest Treatment For Swelling Around The Knee

hello, I have had an achey r knee after I finished a 13.1 race in mid June , no injury but I really pushed it. , started physical therapy. stiffness and tightness in the back of knee has prohibited full extension of knee without pain. I starte stretching and strengthening exercises. last week i was walking a little biyt fast to catch a bus , it was getting tighter and tighter and it popped and buckled. Went to ER and am in brace and crutches. xray revealed lots of swelling around knee. I can weight bear, but it is still swollen in back of knee and tight. I have been icing a elevating for a week.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per your age and history, there is the possibility of soft tissue injury in the knee. Most commonly meniscus injury occurs may be associated with a collateral ligament injury. You may need to do MRI knee to see for any functional defect.

As per your symptoms you need to do physiotherapy and knee exercises to improve range of motion. Rest and ice fomentation along with support brace will help to reduce locking episode and pain.

Small a meniscus tear can be managed conservatively with physiotherapy with USG and TENS. Large meniscus injury can be managed by arthroscopic repair.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
