Suggest Treatment For Swelling Around The Stitches Of Thumb Knuckle

Hello! I got 5 stitches on the top of my thumb knuckle last week Monday. It became swollen after the stitches, and is still swollen. Is that normal? When I touch the skin under the stitches there is an extremely sharp pain under my fingernail, nowhere near where I am touching.

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

An inflammatory response would occur to both the trauma of the injury and also due to the stitches.

Swelling occurs as part of the inflammatory response. It should normally decrease within a few days of the stitches (by 3 to 4 days). The swelling and pain are reduced by the use of anti inflammatory pain killers such as ibuprofen, naproxen or cataflam.

If you are still having swelling a week after the stitches and the area is painful then you need to consider visiting your doctor for assessment.

I hope this helps
