Hi there,I was playing football last August and I was tackled badly and my foot started to swell up, I went to the hospital about it who said that I had ruptured the ligaments in my foot and they took an xray of it , the doctor Said the pain should go away by 2 weeks at the Max but the pain is still there and I followed what the doctor said to do Do I need an operation or not?
Hello and welcome to HCM, Swelling in foot after sustaining injury to the foot can be due to bone fracture or soft tissue injury. Bone fracture is ruled out by normal X-ray. Soft tissue injury includes sprain and strain. Sprain is caused due to rupture of ligaments. As you have mentioned that your ligaments have got ruptured, immobilization is required to allow the ruptured ligaments to heal. Thus, you need to consult your orthopedician for immobilization of the foot for atleast 21 days with a cast. Pain killers should betaken to relieve the pain.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
