Suggest Treatment For Swelling On The Penis Head And Urinary Retention

What causes swelling of the head of the penis after cardiac surgery and recent history of urinary retention which required the use of a Foley catheter? No obvious sign of infection are present. Patient was sent to Skilled nursing unit 6 days after open heart.

Hi,

Thank for consulting us. Swollen head of penis may caused by infection and blockage of the urethra. This can be due to growth of the urethral opening or inflammation of the urethral mucosa. This may not directly related to cardiac surgery however, can be caused by traumatic catheterization of thus was done peri-operative time. All the same it's always good to rule out infection by doing blood test and urine tests. Treatment: Analgesics to reduce pain and swelling and empirical antibiotics to control infection.
