Suggest Treatment For Swelling On Throat And Strep Infection

I tested positive for strep. 24 hrs after finishing my penicillin my throat hurts and feels swollen again, however throat swab that was done on last day of taking penicillin came back negative. was it too soon to pick up strep? seems unlikely to be sick with something else soo soon after.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your history of recurred throat pain after completing penicillin for diagnosed strep throat, fresh test being negative but the throat pain recurred.
The commonest causes I can think about are as follows:
- The inflammation takes time in throat and upper respiratory tract although the infection settles with proper antibiotic.
- Inflamed muscles with spasm.
- Inflammation of hyoid bone and thyroid cartilage causes pain.
This can be diagnosed by the following ways:
- Consult an ENT Surgeon to discuss the above points, clinical evaluation and Endoscopy further investigations as needed.
- Get a prescription for best anti-inflammatory medicines, symptomatic and supportive treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT & General Surgeon
