Suggest Treatment For Swelling, Pain And Fluid In The Knees

I am a dancer and last year after November I was doing a leap jump and landed on one leg and injured myself. I recently got an MRI and the results were good except I have some fluid causing my knee area to be swollen causing pain when I do my daily activities. It doesn t hurt when I walk however it does feel painful when I jump almost like it s weak. How can I fix this my next week please help. Any advice?

Hi,

Your history is strongly suggestive of a ligamentous or meniscus injury in the knee. Although your MRI is reported as having only effusion (fluid), I often see that MRIs are reported wrong and the reporting physician has not noticed a rather small rupture or degeneration.

What you should do is as follows:
1- Relative rest: Do not do the activities that are painful such as dancing, until you become sure that no partial tear exists, because it may change a partial tear to a full thickness tear.
2- Use anti-inflammatory medication such as Ibuprofen or Diclofenac to reduce pain and effusion (the intra-articular fluid).
3- You can use a Knee Orthosis for further support.
4- Review the MRI with another radiologist or an orthopedist.
5- If the problem persists you should start some physiotherapy sessions.
6- At any stage that the pain and swelling are relieved, you should start knee exercises as well as stretching of the calf and hamstring muscles.
7- Always warm-up before starting the dance or other rigorous activity. At the end, do not forget the cool-down.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
