Suggest Treatment For Swelling Reduced Movement In Foot After Injury

I rolled my ankle two weeks ago and the x-rays came back fine. I can t put any weight on it and have been on crutches. If I m upright, the leg and ankle and foot swell up painfully, and now the swelling isn t going down even with elevation. The ankle is also feeling hot for the first time. I can t lift my foot off the ground without a lot of pain, so I lift it with an ace bandage. The air cast hits my ankle at the wrong spot and puts too much weight on my ankle.

Anesthesiologist 's  Response
Hello,

Your ankle seems to have suffered from any condition like tendon tear, ligament sprain, bursitis of ankle joint, cellulitis, Achilles tendinitis, ankle fracture. To those who come to my clinic with similar symptoms, I would recommend an X-ray ankle joint AP and lateral views. Sometimes fractures are missed in initial X-rays so you may repeat X-ray, thorough examination of the ankle joint for any infection. First analgesics like NSAIDs ibuprofen and Aceclofenac are to be taken twice daily for pain relief. Tab. Chymoral forte to be taken twice daily.

Tab. Acetaminophen for fever and rise in temperature. If X-rays are inconclusive, MRI ankle is to be done to identify tendon and ligament tears. Please do consult an orthopedic surgeon for detailed clinical examination and few tests required for an appropriate treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

General & Family Physician Dr. Vasudha's  Response
Hi,

I would suggest another X-ray of the part to exclude hair line fracture. Other possibility is sprain or tear of ligament around ankle. In case of swelling and pain you should for ice pack, rest to the part and avoid weight bearing. Consult an orthopedic doctor for more specific treatment after investigations.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale, General & Family Physician
