Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello, my 13 year old rolled his right ankle. I think it is a sprain. There is no discoloration or little detectable swelling... At what point should one go in for an x-ray? The pain was a 4-6 when it happened. We ve iced and taken advil for the past 2 hours....He broke his left 2 years ago, so we want to be certain. Thanks
Hello and welcome to HCM, Rolling of the ankle joint can lead to fracture of the ankle or soft tissue injury to the soft tissue around the ankle joint. A X-ray is required to rule out possibility of fracture of the ankle joint and you should go for x-ray at the earliest. If any injury to the bone is noticed, it can be managed at the earliest. If there is only soft tissue injury like sprain to the muscles, appropriate treatment can be given which includes immobilization of the joint, pain killers and anti-inflammatory drugs.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
