Suggest Treatment For Swollen And Painful Knee

My Mom (85 years old) has excessive swelling in both her knees and upper thighs. She is in pain and her legs are enlarged and hard to the touch. She especially has problems bending her knees when getting in and out of the car. In addition, the skin on her lower legs are very tough and have numerous pimples or scabs. Her left foot in black/bluish at the ankle. I ve researching this, but it could be so many things. She took an MRI of her legs, but the test shows nothing seriously wrong. I m contacting the doctor to see if there is some other source for this swelling, but am still waiting to hear from him. Any insight you could give me would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have swollen and painful knee. Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like Chondromalacia, Bursitis, gout , Arthritis, Osteochondritis, Ton Meniscus , bakers cyst or infection . For now take proper rest , keep your leg elevated while laying down , take ibuprofen or acetaminopehn for pain and lower your salt consumption. I would suggest you to consult an Orthopedician and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like x ray, CT Scan , blood tests and physical examination etc as per suspected cause can help in diagnosis and treatment can be planned accordingly.Doctor may prescribe anti-inflammatory painkillers, muscle relaxants, warm or cool compresses depending upon the cause, physiotherapy to relieve and strengthen the muscles, weight loss and doctor may also prescribe nerve supplement along with antibiotics in case of infection or surgical excision in case of cyst .

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
