Suggest Treatment For Swollen And Painful Throat

Over the last several days my sister ( non-smoker, very healthy) developed a very bad sore throat, throat was swollen making it hard to swallow. Her speech and voice is slightly slurred and she s a bit hoarse. No fever, chills fatigue. The Prednisone is helping. Any thoughts what it is? Blood work coming back tomorrow, but it s a long wait to get into an ENT. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Hi Dear ,

A per your query your sister has swollen and painful throat which is affecting her voice . Well the symptoms you mention in query are pointing towards a condition known as sore throat , which occur due to bacterial or viral infection . Infection like upper respiratory track infection or sore throat sometimes spread to surroundings like larynx and cause laryngitis . I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist for proper treatment . Doctor may order throat swab test and viral culture test . Doctor may prescribe antibiotics ( amoxicillin or penicillin ) . For now do warm saline gargles several times a day and take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain and swelling ,also Continue taking prednisone if its helping .
