Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My daughter is 15 and her right ankle has been bothering her as she did sprain it recently but has not had any swelling or anything up until just a few days ago. She is on a class trip with the marching band in Florida and her ankle has become very swollen and is actually redish purple in collor, I talked with the nurse along on trip and she said she has edema on both legs but more on right one. She has never had edema before and yes they have been doing alot of walking, and spent 25 hrs on the bus ride there. She did have her elevate her legs and apply ice and it went down some. Is this something I should be really concerned about, can edema just happen?
The edema could be easily related with lack of mobility and long durations of travel and being seated, but the added history of a possible sprain raises doubt for this to be associated with the injury.
With a recent sprain, she should not be marching, walking or traveling for long durations of time. I would recommend rest, a physical evaluation by an orthopedician and not a nurse, and an x-ray film of the affected region. If possible, with her best interest at heart, please pull her out of this trip at the earliest. A sprain some times depicts the same symptoms as a hairline fracture, and this certainly needs to be ruled out.
Best wishes.
