My legs, ankles and feet are very swollen. They are hard, pit when pressed. I have just returned from vacation and always have trouble w/ legs swelling when flying. But this trip I had severe leg pain when on the plane...every time. My legs still are swollen and hurting. Should I see my MD?

Hello,

Your legs, ankle and feet are swollen. You also have pitting edema. Your legs are hurting. Commonly such symptoms occur due to water retention in the body. Restrict the amount of salt you have been taking and avoid salty snacks. If diabetic, control your blood glucose levels under control. If not diabetic, you should avoid taking high carbohydrate and sugary food. Avoid standing for a long time at a place, stay active. Keep your foot elevated on a pillow when on bed and on a stool when sitting. Give rest to your legs.

If overweight, reduce weight. The treatment will depend on the cause of the swelling. Such symptoms are commonly caused due to varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis, lymphedema, chronic kidney disease, acute kidney failure, thrombophlebitis, developing heart ailments, etc. You are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP, get all required blood works, tests, investigations, urinalysis, imaging tests done to detect the pathology causing you symptoms, it will be accordingly treated.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
