Suggest Treatment For Swollen Area After Blood Drawing
I had 7 vials of blood drawn today for testing. I was told that they would be taking a lot of blood and to make sure I at after. They drew blood via my hand using a tube. I didn t really feel the needle going in but the longer it was there I felt a cool numbing sensation. After the needle was removed it started to swell around the area within minutes. It is extremely painful and sensitive at the sight (where the swelling is looks like it s filled with blood) especially when my hand is down or I move it. I am also getting pain all up my arm to under my armpit. I have had blood drawn many times buts never experienced this.
Hello. Thanks for writing to us at healthcaremagic.
Swelling is most likely to be due to seepage of blood from the venepuncture site into the surrounding tissues (hematoma) and it is normal for this area to be sore after a needle puncture. This can usually be avoided by applying firm pressure at the puncture site for 3-5 minutes after withdrawing the needle to let the clotting mechanism to activate and seal the puncture site. The swelling would go down in about 24 hours and the sore feeling would subside too in 3-5 days. I don't think there is anything to be concerned about. No specific intervention is required.
