Suggest Treatment For Swollen Area On Base Of Skull And Armpit

My 5 year old son has pea sized swollen area to the back of his neck below the base of his skull. Today we found a marble sized swollen area near his left armpit ... These are painless and he hasn t really been sick lately... He has a history of infections such as pneumonia and ear infections.. Does this sound serious? Or am I being overly worried ? Thanks

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

From your description of the swelling and their location, you must have felt his lymph nodes in the neck and armpit. They are normally present there. They may have become more obvious and swollen due to recent infections. They basically help protect and clear the body during infections.

As you have mentioned, previous infections could have caused this. They tend to persist in a swollen for weeks after infection. It is more easily felt in kids.

If you do notice several new swellings, painful swellings, firm or hard/ immobile swellings do consult your doctor. Also, if fever and infections are recurrent, blood tests can help rule out the cause and check for allergies, immunity, etc.
In case of any new complaints please do see a doctor who can physically examine him and clear your doubts.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dinah Levillard
