Suggest Treatment For Swollen Lymph Nodes In The Neck

Hey, I have been experiencing the same problem for about a year 1/2 now. About a year or so ago, I noticed that one of my lymph nodes were swollen in my neck and one of my tonsils (only on the right side). I went to see an ent doctor and they gave me an ultrasound of my neck and saw nothing but a small lymph node and the swollen gland and said it was a virus, not known and would heal on its own. It hasn t gotten any worse or anything, the lymph node is the same size and so is the tonsils. I do have a baby tooth (with an silver tooth), as an adult tooth was never underneath to grow.. It is infected (black tooth) do you think this could be the reason for the swollen tonsil on one side and lymph node?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Based on the history you have shared, the inflammation of the lymph node can be due to both of these possibilities.

One acute upper respiratory tract infection causing tonsillitis and leading to lymph node enlargement since but dental infection can also cause the same.

However, lymph node swelling since persistent this long needs evaluation for other causes.

I suggest taking blood workup with complete blood counts as well as inflammatory markers like ESR etc. However, most specific and relevant investigation seems to be lymph node biopsy.

Fine needle aspiration may not yield the results thus excision biopsy is more appropriate and this will clear alot of doubts regarding its etiology.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
