Suggest Treatment For Swollen Lymph Nodes On The Neck

I have a bad infection in my neck with my lymph glands swollen. I am now taking 1000 mg of amoxicillin. My question is I have been taking allopurinol for a month, could the allopurinol be causing me to have severe infections? Could it be depressing my immune system. The reason I asked is my WBC was normal prior to taking the allopurinol, now it is below normal.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
I assume you have Gout for which you are taking Allopurinol. The answer to your question is yes, allopurinol can decrease white blood cell count which in turn can predispose to infection. Therefore regular CBC must be done to keep track of your cell changes in blood.
If you are taking the drug for gout it is not advisable to stop it as it can induce a flare. I would recommend you to reevaluate the dosing with your physician. You can also try to increase personal hygiene and protective measures against infections.
