Suggest Treatment For Swollen, Stiff And Painful Knee

Hi Doctor, I am a healthy 63 year old, however both of my knees are a little worn and give me a little discomfort from time to time (my right one is currently only very slightly swollen and stiffens up giving me mild discomfort). I do a lot of walking and play golf. I am due to do the 3 peaks challenge in early June and am anxious that I am not let down by my knees. I am thinking about supporting both knees with 6inch crepe bandages....just in case! May I ask you what your opinion is of this idea? and would you recommend something different? Also I do not like taking any sort of medication, but should I need some anti-inflammatory help, I have been thinking of taking Ibuprofen - I am told that with food I can take 3 x 400mgs dosage over the 24 hour period in exceptional circumstances, please can you advise what you would recommend as a dosage. With thanks and regards, Jamie Lister

Hi,

For the swollen and stiff knees, some home remedies you can try include:
* Rest: Avoid overusing the knee and take frequent breaks from activities that cause discomfort.
* Ice: Apply ice to the affected knee for 20 minutes at a time, several times a day as it can help curb swelling as well as inflammation.
* Compression: As you mentioned, using a crepe bandage can help provide support and compression to the knee, reducing swelling.
* Elevation: Keep the affected leg elevated as much as possible to help reduce swelling.

If these remedies don't provide relief, you may want to consider seeing a doctor or physical therapist for further evaluation and treatment options.

Regarding your question about ibuprofen, it's important to follow the dosing instructions provided by your doctor or on the label. Generally, the maximum daily dose for adults is 3200mg, divided into several doses throughout the day. However, taking high doses of ibuprofen for an extended period can lead to stomach problems and other side effects, so it's important to use it only as directed and with caution.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
