Suggest Treatment For Swollen Upper Lip, Sunburns On Leg And Arm

I was outside for 2 hours this past Saturday. I take Levothyroxine 100 mcg, Lisinopril 10 mg, Junel (birth control) and generic zyrtec. I got sunburnt, maybe even wind burnt. Saturday night, my upper lip became swollen while sleeping. I woke up and my upper lip was huge! I took a generic zyrtec, thinking it was probably allergy related, and it did eventually go down. My legs and one arm, the sunburn is still painful if scratched, rubbed or in the shower. Today, while at work, my neck was itchy, and I looked in the mirror and my neck is all broke out in hives. Could this be a reaction from sun and medications I am taking?

Hello,

Your symptoms indicate an allergic reaction mostly due to medications. It may also be due to sun exposure. Both the drugs levothyroxine and lisinopril cause rash and urticaria as their adverse effect. Lisinopril increases photosensitivity thus resulting in sun burns.

For treatment, avoid exposure to sun. Talk to your doctor to change or reduce the dosage of current medication. Tab. Cetirizine for 3 days. Calamine lotion to be applied over rash. If the reactions gets worse with difficulty in breathing, injection Hydrocortisone is to be taken.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
