Suggest Treatment For Symptoms Of Munchausen Syndrome
My older sister has been showing signs of Munchausen Syndrome. How can I approach this issue? She consistently has a new and worst issue but her doctors never agree. It s seems now all she wants is attention and actually acts sick when other are around to see it. And now she seems to be adding one illness after another to her 7 year old daughter. I m not sure what to do
If your sister is simulating diseases to her own daughter this is called Munchausen by proxy. In itself, this may be considered child abuse. It is very important that the safety of the child is taken into consideration and proper evaluation is done. You may share you concerns with her doctor, so he can see into this, and if he thinks this is the case, he may need to report this so that the child is protected.
This is a very difficult scenario and needs a lot of wisdom and cooperation with the medical staff to make sure both the mother and the child are taken care of.
I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.
Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj, General & Family Physician
