Suggest Treatment For Tenderness And Soreness After Stepping On Charred Nail
My 21 year old son stepped on a nail (from a deck board) that had been in a fire and was charred. It didn t go deep into his foot. I don t remember when his last tetanus shot was. We cleaned it with peroxide and soap/water. It s quite tender and sore. Is a shot needed?
Yes, your son certainly needs a tetanus toxoid shot. Please have a tetanus toxoid shot. The wound must be cleaned thoroughly and antiseptic betadine ointment is to be applied. It is necessary to rest the affected foot. If the pain is severe, NSAIDs like Ibuprofen can be used. Tab. Chymoral AP containing trypsin, cymotrypsin, paracetamol and aceclofenac can be used twice daily.
To prevent gastric irritation, tab. Pantop 40 mg is to be taken before food. Daily irrigation of the wound with sterile normal saline is to be done. Avoid exposure of the affected foot to dust and rest the foot from weight bearing. Even with the above treatment, if the wound doesn't show any signs of healing, then you need to consult a physician in person.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
