Suggest Treatment For Thecal Sac Indentation Of Nerve Root
hai dr,my mother diagnosed with disc osteophytic complexes at c3-4 level causing thecal sac intendation and compression of traversing nerve root.she has symptoms of numbness in both arms, sensory loss in left feet.she is wearing cervical collar for 20 days now.can you suggest further management,if surgery is essential?complications of surgery?
hi You may consult your spine surgeon if he thinks necessary may advise for cervical traction for few days to distract joint surfaces and reduce impingement on nerve along with physical therapy and anti-inflammatory drugs. If this does help then surgery may still be waited, otherwise removal of obstructive osteophytes, foraminotomy(widening the foramina to relieve nerve pressure) or if necessary, fusion of vertebrae also. Surgery in safe hands may have no complications as such.We must ensure that she doesnt have osteoporosis by BMD dexa scan before giving traction, ans rule out any arthritis of spine like rheumatoid with help of blood tests, and assess heart and kidney functions, and diabetes Regards,
