Suggest Treatment For Throbbing Pain In The Head Along With Pressure

The back of my husband s head throbs while lying down. He has been feeling lightheaded all day. Also said it feels like pressure on his head. When he tries to lay down it feels like he is going to pass out. Right now he is trying to sleep propped up on the couch. Any ideas of what it can be?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

A throbbing sensation is one of the most common symptom often seen during headaches. Throbbing is due to dilation of blood vessels after increased blood flow. Once you develop headache, blood rushes to the affected area of the head resulting in the throbbing sensation. It is seen in migraine, occipital neuralgia, cluster headache, temporal arteritis etc.

I advise you to use heat therapy, head massage, NSAIDs and muscle relaxants in case of occipital neuralgia. Ergotamines, triptans, or opioids for migraines. Triptan nasal spray or DHE injections are helpful in cluster headache.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
