Suggest Treatment For Throbbing Pain On The Foot

While moving a couch, I stepped backwards, missed a step and turned my right foot under. I haven t gone to the Dr. as of yet, but rather I iced it and stretched it immediately and have since. It is now 1 1/2 wks later, its a little swollen when I don t stay off it and toes are still black/blue and its still difficult to walk on, its very tender. The pain is greatest yet from my baby toe down, 1/2 way to my heal, on the side of my foot, in the little bone on the edge of the foot and when I put pressure on it. Today it was a bit swollen and I m getting periodic, throbbing pain in that bone on the side of my foot now. Do you suppose this is a fracture and what should I do now? Can a person get a blood clot in that area of bruising as well?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

As far as your history suggests, the pain is not due to some vein or artery blood clot which is called an embolism. The pain might be due to some soft tissue reoccurring injury or a hairline fracture, also known as a stress fracture, which is a small crack or severe bruise within a bone. This injury is most common in athletes, heavy-duty professionals. People with osteoporosis can also develop it. Proper rest with no weight bearing plus calcium supplements are required, plus a back slab for 15 days would be ideal.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
