Hi I m janette, I got diagnosed of thyroid nodule about 3 yrs ago.I did biopsy @ it s benign but last month I did my yearly ultrasound @ found out that it grow past just a yr.@ found another 2on other side .just want to know if what is the best solution coz I felt trouble of my breathing sometime @ I felt tightness on my neck.it is safe to do a surgery? How long does it takes for me to go back to work?
Hello and welcome to HCM, Development of multiple nodules in thyroid needs to be investigated. Thyroid function tests are required to know the status of thyroid functions. Aspiration cytology of the thyroid gland is required. In aspiration cytology, cells are aspirated from the thyroid gland and studied under the microscope to know the nature and character of lesion. In case the thyroid gland turns out to be benign as mentioned previously, surgical removal of the gland may be required to relieve the pressure symptoms on neck. In case the swelling turns out to be malignant one, in that case also, surgical intervention will be required. I suggest you to consult your doctor for clinical assessment and aspiration cytology.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
