Suggest Treatment For Torn Muscles

My left bicep muscle tore several years ago with no pain and I wads unaware of the tear until I noticed a Popeye appearance while shaving one morning. On a visit with my orthopedic doc for another reason, he asked me how did you tear your muscle . I couldn t answer & never had any pain. Yesterday I lifted my right arm up and felt a minor pain in my bicep and this am there is bruising on that muscle. I have been working out for 3+years strengthening my rotator cuffs in both shoulder using a 5 lb weight and rubber bands prescribed by my doc using exercises by my physical therapist. Could there be any blood, hormone etc causes affecting my muscles? I am a 75 yr old man in good health, taking statins, aspirin, lotensen, Celebrex & various OTC drugs. I am not a diabetic nor do I have any cardiovascular disease. Also take 300 mg of Wellbutrin. Any thoughts? Thanks, David Peck

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Those it seems to be neurological issue like nerve impingement etc but myopathy should be ruled out with baseline LDH, CPK and calcium levels. The drug history you mentioned, included statins which can also cause such muscular issues so should be reviewed accordingly. Sensory nervous system examination as well as NCS and EMG may need to be performed.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Saddiq Ulabidin, General & Family Physician
