Hello concerned parent,
First of all, I would like you to know that 11 years is not a usual age for the onset of
tic disorders. It usually starts around 5-7 years of age and resolves by late teens on its own, rarely does it continue. Hence, please be relieved that this situation will be solved. But, there is some more information that I would like to know:
1. These tics could also be a manifestation of some
anxiety. Hence, we need to find out what exactly happened at the summer camp. It shall be important to know any psychological
stress that may have precipitated these tics.
2. I would like to know if there is any family history of Tic disorder/
Obsessive compulsive disorder in the family, as this would affect the choice of treatment.
3. With due respect to the treating doctor, the decision of taking medicines would depend on how troublesome the tics are. If they are just a csmetic issue and are not affecting the functioning of the child, you may decide to not take treatment and wait for it to resolve spontaneously, provided there is no underlying anxiety disorder.
4. There are some activities that may help divert the child's attention or engage him/her in activities that are not compatible with the tic. this will help the child gain control over his/her tics and raise his/her confidence.
I hope I have solved your query.
Please feel free to ask more questions.
Regards!
