Suggest Treatment For Trouble Swallowing In A Smoker

Hi. Im having trouble swallowing for the past 3 days. And it hurts only when i swallow. There are no lumps or swellings on my neck. i do not have persistent cough. But i am a smoker, have been since 19. Now im 22, female. But not a heavy smoker. How do i tell if i have throat cancer? What are thr chances of it being so.

Hello,

Trouble swallowing is common. By the way, I don't think you have a throat cancer or something serious. Because you haven't mentioned any other symptoms like weight loss, vomiting of blood.

The possible causes of difficulty in swallowing are disorders of esophagus like achalasia, scleroderma, esophageal spasms, narrowed esophagus like in case of thyroid swelling, esophageal webs and tumors, neurological problems like Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, GERD leading to scarring of esophagus, acute tonsillitis, myasthenia gravis and muscular dystrophy.

I would advise patients who come with similar complaints to my clinic to provide a detailed history, get a thorough examination clinically, and if necessary, a flexible laryngoscopy. If the problem persists, then fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing.

Treatment always depends upon the underlying cause. You need antibiotics in case of tonsillitis. Thyroid swelling is to be treated if any along with control or prevention of acid reflux. Please consult a physician or a general surgeon for accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
