Suggest Treatment For Type-2 Diabetes And Kidney Stones
Hi, My dad has type 2 diabetes that is uncontrolled. He is obese and is on high doses of insulin. He does not take care of himself at all. He has a very large kidney stone that his doctor is aware of however, over the past few days he seems to be in a lot of pain which he is attributing to the kidney stone. I am worried that his kidneys are starting to shut down due to the uncontrolled diabetes. How do I know when to make him go to the doctor?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi,
Being a type 2 diabetes, even if the pain is due to stone his kidney function is going to suffer and get affected at a greater degree due to diabetes. I would suggest to get his diabetic profile, kidney function tests done to assess the actual status. In case it's stone, treatment would save kidney health. Diabetic profile being at fault to cause kidney damage would need a specific treatment. In short he should consult a diabetologist and Kidney specialist also. Don't wait for symptoms to become more grave.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
