Suggest Treatment For Weight Gain And Jaw Pain

I am not sure if I should see my doctor but I have not been feeling well. I have gained almost 40lbs in the last 5-6 months, making me obese. I can t seem to lose the weight it just keeps tacking on. I have been pretty irregular and the last 4 weeks been constipated. I put extra fiber powder in my water every day and take a laxative at least 3 times a week, just to poop every 2-3 days. I started taking the laxatives last week when it was 5 days since my last bowel movement. I have had jaw pain by my ear for at least 8 years when I talk & eat sweets, but about a month and half ago I had a piece of candy and my gland just below the ear lobe swelled up and it felt like a knife was being jammed in there. I used a heating pad and sucked on sour candy for 4 days and haven t had any severe swelling since. I don t sleep well, very restless or short deep sleep and am tired all the time. I have tried walking more for weight loss and health, but my feet fall asleep while walking and it is difficult. I am 43 and had a hysterectomy when I was 38 for sever endometriosis. I am 5 10 and 130 lbs. Do these symptoms mean anything is wrong with my hormones? or am I just getting older and out of shape?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Your symptoms could be indicative of a variety of medical conditions, such as hormonal imbalances, thyroid disorders, gastrointestinal issues, or even potentially serious conditions such as diabetes or heart disease.

The sudden and significant weight gain, irregular bowel movements, and constipation could potentially be caused by an underlying medical condition such as a thyroid disorder or hormonal imbalance. It is also possible that a poor diet or lack of exercise may be contributing to these symptoms.

Your jaw pain could be a symptom of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, which is a common condition that affects the jaw joint and muscles used for chewing. However, the sudden swelling you experienced after eating sweets is concerning and should be evaluated by a doctor. The difficulty sleeping, restlessness, and constant fatigue could also be indicative of an underlying medical condition or simply poor sleep habits.

It is important to see a doctor to receive an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. In the meantime, you may want to focus on making healthy lifestyle changes such as eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and getting enough restful sleep. It is also important to avoid using laxatives without first consulting with a doctor, as they can be harmful when used excessively.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
