Suggest Treatment Option For Leaky Heart Valve In The Elderly
My 94-year-old mother was recently diagnosed with a leaky heart valve. She has a pacemaker and take blood pressure medication. What can our family expect for future treatment? I there any option, other than surgery, which is out of the question at her age?
Treatment actually depends on degree of leakiness and its impact on hearts pumping action. Apart from surgery, usual drugs prescribed are diuretics to decongest circulation, ionotrops to augment hearts pumping action and drugs to control blood pressure and few other drugs to prevent blood clotting and remodelling of heart muscle. Since its a complicated decision making after considering many factors including ECHO findigns, kindly discuss with your cardiologist.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam TK, Pediatrician
