Suggest Treatment To Care Toenails And Hammer Toes In Elders
hello, i am starting to care for my elderly father. he has foot problems that he has cared for on his own for years. he has hammer toes, tonail fungus and on the bottom of his foot he develops a thick calus between the balls of his foot. this calus becomes very painful. his hammer toes are painful as well which because they are twisted cause his raised mishaped toenails to cut into his other toes. just how do i take care of his toenails and hammer toes?
Hammer toe is a deformity of the second, third or fourth toe, when the toe appears permanently bent at the joint. There are a number of causes of hammer toe. Ill-fitting shoes are a common culprit. Injury, bunions or rheumatoid arthritis are other causes.
Hammer toe can cause other problems. Because the toe joint sticks out, it is more susceptible to shoes rubbing, meaning corns and calluses can develop. Hammer toes can also cause stress on the ball of the foot, which can lead to pain known as metatarsalgia.
The first treatment is to know what is the underlying cause for hammer toes and try and correct it. Anti fungal ointments or medications might be needed to treat toe nail fungal infections and any nails cutting across must be regularly cut to avoid further injury. Shoes must be worn as per size, shape and comfort.
